Meet Jon
For Jon Yokouchi, Maui has always been more than the place he calls home. It is where his family built their lives, where he was raised with a deep sense of responsibility to community, and where he hopes future generations will continue to have the opportunity to live, work, raise their families, and grow old.
That sense of responsibility was shaped in large part by his father, Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi.
Pundy came from humble beginnings and went on to become a respected Maui businessman and community leader whose impact can still be felt throughout the island. He was a driving force behind the creation of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, served as the founding chairman of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and supported numerous community efforts throughout his lifetime. Above all, he believed deeply in giving back to the place and the people who had given so much to him.
Growing up, Jon had a front-row seat to what service to your community could look like. He watched his dad build relationships, bring people together, listen, help where he could, and continually find ways to make Maui a better place. Pundy was remembered by those closest to him as humble, compassionate, wise, and deeply committed to his community — a legacy that has stayed with Jon throughout his own life.
This election season, Jon found himself thinking more and more about that example.
He thought about what his father taught him about giving back, about stepping forward when your community needs you, and about understanding that creating a better future requires people who are willing to do the work.
For Jon, running for Maui County Council is his opportunity to step up and serve the community that has given his family so much.
Over the years, Jon has watched too many friends, family members, and people he grew up with make the difficult decision to leave Maui. Families who love this place have found themselves struggling with the cost of housing, limited opportunities, infrastructure challenges, and the simple reality that remaining home has become increasingly difficult.
Jon believes Maui cannot afford to accept that as our future.
Our local families should not have to choose between the island they love and being able to afford a home. Our children should not grow up believing that leaving Hawaiʻi is their only path toward building a stable future. And our kūpuna should be able to see their children and grandchildren build lives close to home rather than watching generation after generation move away.
“We have to start making decisions that help our families stay, not decisions that continue pushing them away. Maui is home. I want our children and grandchildren to have the same opportunity to build their lives here that generations before us had.”
Why Jon is running for Maui County Council?
He believes Maui County needs immediate, practical action that puts local families first — addressing our water and infrastructure needs, creating more attainable housing opportunities, supporting a strong local economy, and planning responsibly for the future.
Jon knows that one person cannot solve every challenge Maui faces. But he believes strongly in listening, bringing people together, working collaboratively, and being willing to take on the difficult work required to create meaningful change.
His father left him an example of what it means to give back to your community.
Today, Jon is ready to carry that lesson forward in his own way — serving Maui, standing up for local families, and helping build a future where the people who call these islands home can afford to remain here for generations to come.
